University Centre of Bioinformatics, T.M. Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur was established in 2005 with motto to provide learning opportunity in the field of Bioinformatics and funded by DBT, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India under BTISNet (Biotechnology Information System Network) Program. It is a matter of great pride for our University that this is the only Sub-DIC Bioinformatics Centre in the State of Bihar which caters to the needs of U.G. and P.G. students of Science faculty, Teachers and Research Scholars. Since its inception, the Centre has conducted classes regularly on Computer Application and Bioinformatics for U.G. and P.G. Students of Science/Biotechnology and has also provided networking information facility through internet to faculties and research scholars of Bhagalpur University and also to other universities of Bihar. In fact, the Centre has been functioning on Integrated Information Resource on all aspects of Biological Science in gene and Molecular Biological data/Data-Mining of Biological Resources in particular. The Centre has developed adequate infrastructure in past-years. Other than students, about 100- users per month are availing the benefits of these facilities created in the centre.

The Centre has been regularly conducting various courses for students and researchers, namely: Computer Paper under CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) for M.Sc. Students, Research Methodology Course, Certificate Course in Bioinformatics (Six months), PGDIB (Post Graduate Diploma in Bioinformatics), PGDCA (Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application) and BCA (Bachelor in Computer Application). Moreover the Centre is engaged in its own research activities on different aspects of Plant Sciences. In addition, the Centre has been organizing Seminars/ Workshops/ Training Courses in front areas of Bioinformatics at local, regional and national levels every year.

Centre has already developed an online database on medicinal plants (MediPdb) which can be viewed on www.bioinfotmbu.org/bio-info This Website provides the ability to add fungi and plant details, plant and fungi search facility based on different criteria etc. It gives adequate information related to various aspects of Bioinformatics.

Overall, the Centre has created a big impact on Bhagalpur University and neighbouring institutions towards teaching and research in Bioinformatics and also caters to the needs of students at degree and post-graduate level. In fact, the Centre is supporting quality education to all the stakeholders of the present education system. Moreover, Bhagalpur University is located in the rural area with students coming from socio-economically poor and weaker sections of the Society. The existence of the present Centre thus helps in capacity building of students and researchers and also encourages the concept of digitalization among the students of this area.
